MAE Jag Blast, January 2023

Message from the Principal:

Happy New Year, MAE! I know 2023 is going to be an amazing year, and we are so excited to kick off the 3rd 9 weeks of instruction at MAE! It is time to transition back into the routine of school. Please ensure your child is arriving each day on time with a charged device. Please make sure you are checking folders each night and working hard to complete any assignments. If your child is absent, please send in a dated and signed excuse. Remember that once a student has missed a total of 15 days, we can only excuse days out with a doctor's note. Please also focus on making reading a priority. Our K-2 students need as many minutes as possible reading each night. Book-in-a-bag texts, books of choice from home, and books from our school library are all great options. You should spend time reading to and reading with your child. Reading involves many skills such as using phonics to decode and vocabulary development to comprehend and extend learning. Spend time discussing the strategies your child is using to decode and the meaning of new words. Allow them to ask questions and converse about characters actions or informaton gained from nonfiction texts. Kindergarten students will begin AR this 9 weeks, and we are excited to see their reading growth as they begin the program. Report cards for 2nd 9 weeks are scheduled to go home on Thursday, January 12th. Please note the BAS/reading level and any skills that are marked with a circled L. A circled L indicates a skill that should have been mastered but was still a challenge for your student. Students must have an M (for mastery) in at least 80% of the skills and the required BAS/reading level at the end of the year to be promoted to the next grade. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns about your child's progress. We appreciate your continued support as we enter 2023. As always, if you have any ideas, questions, or concerns about your child or the school, please do not hesitate to contact us. It is our responsibility and privilege to partner with you to ensure your child has the best learning experience possible. Sincerely, Melissa Philley
